SignUpGenius alternatives, compared honestly

Most people looking for a SignUpGenius alternative want one of two things: a sheet that is quicker to build, or a page without advertising on it for the volunteers they are asking a favour of. SignUp.com is the closest like-for-like swap. Event Wranglr is the one that writes the sheet for you and shows no advertising on any plan. Perfect Potluck and Meal Train beat both if you only need meals for one household.

We make one of these, so read the table with that in mind. Every number in it is quoted from the vendor's own published pricing page and linked at the bottom, so you can check it rather than take our word for it. Prices were read on 20 September 2026 and vendors change them.

What SignUpGenius is genuinely good at

It is the incumbent for a reason, and switching is not obviously right for everybody. Its free plan is unusually generous on the axis that matters most to a small group: unlimited sign-up pages and unlimited participants, with email invitations and reminders included. It has been running for well over a decade, every other parent has already used it, and nobody has to be taught what it is. It also does things Event Wranglr does not — payment collection and fundraising among them.

If ads on the volunteer's page do not bother you, and building the sheet by hand is not the part you dread, there is a good case for staying put.

The ads, specifically

This is the complaint that sends most people looking, so it is worth being precise rather than rude about it. SignUpGenius's own plan-selection guide names the friction that pushes free users to upgrade as “ads on participant-facing pages, limited custom questions, and no text reminders”, and frames the first paid tier's benefit as “ads are removed from one sign up”.

Its published pricing sheet meters ad removal as a unit: one advertising-free sign-up on Silver, ten on Gold, and unlimited only on Platinum at $539.89 a year. So on a $29.99-a-month plan an organizer still only gets ten clean sheets. That is the fact; whether it matters is your call, and for plenty of PTAs it genuinely does not.

What Event Wranglr does differently

Two things, and they are the only two worth switching for.

  • It writes the sheet. You describe the event in a sentence — “baked potato bar for 100 staff, the PTA buys the potatoes, parents donate toppings” — and it works out how much food that is, converts it into the packages a supermarket sells, and builds the slots. Sixty pounds of potatoes becomes six ten-pound bags. A hundred and eleven plates becomes four packs of thirty.
  • No advertising, on any plan, ever. The page your volunteers open carries your organization's name and the list, and nothing else.

Around those two, the rest of the job is there too, free: sheets and emails in Spanish that you check before families see them, a waitlist when an event fills, check-in on the day, and a “How it went” sheet afterwards, on paper or on your phone, that next year’s plan starts from.

Switching takes one paste. Paste your SignUpGenius sign-up and see it rebuilt here, before you make an account.

It is free to use. It costs real money to run, so after an event has happened it asks once whether it was worth contributing to, and takes no for an answer. There is no tier, no trial and no card to enter.

Questions people ask

What is the best free alternative to SignUpGenius?

It depends what is wrong with it for you. If the problem is advertising on the page your volunteers see, Event Wranglr has none on any page; SignUp.com sells ad-free as an upgrade on its paid plans. If the problem is that building the sheet is slow, Event Wranglr writes the sheet from a description of the event. If you only need a meal calendar for one family, Perfect Potluck is free and does exactly that. SignUpGenius itself remains genuinely free for unlimited sheets and unlimited participants, so if ads do not bother you there may be no reason to move.

Does SignUpGenius show ads to volunteers?

Yes, on the free plan. SignUpGenius's own plan-selection guide describes the friction that pushes free users to upgrade as “ads on participant-facing pages”, and its published pricing counts ad removal as a metered unit: one advertising-free sign-up on Silver ($107.89/year), ten on Gold ($269.89/year), and unlimited only on Platinum ($539.89/year). Checked 20 September 2026.

How much does SignUpGenius cost?

Its published plans as of 20 September 2026 are Silver at $11.99/month or $107.89/year, Gold at $29.99/month or $269.89/year, and Platinum at $59.99/month or $539.89/year, with an unpriced Enterprise tier. Payments carry a separate 5% plus $0.50 per transaction. The free plan keeps unlimited sign-up pages and unlimited participants.

Is there a sign-up tool that works out how much food to buy?

Event Wranglr does. You describe the event in a sentence and it produces the quantities, converts them into the packages a supermarket actually sells, and builds the sign-up sheet from that. As of September 2026 none of the other tools reviewed here does this — they host a sheet whose contents a person decided.

Do volunteers need an account to sign up?

Not for SignUpGenius, SignUp.com, Meal Train, Perfect Potluck or Event Wranglr — all of them let a volunteer claim a slot from a link with a name and an email. TeamSnap and Band are different: those require the volunteer to install an app and join a group.
